Day at the US National Arboretum | Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there.  I hope  everyone has a fantastic day today.  Sharyn and I went out to the US National Arboretum yesterday to enjoy the Azaleas and Perennials Collections along with a few other exhibits.  We had a great day basking in the sun.  As a compromise I told Sharyn I’d bring just one lens on our romp through the park.  So, of course, I had to bring the new Macro lens (Nikon 105mm f/2.8).  I love the shallow depth of field on this lens in macro work.  But when you need to get more in focus you stop the lens all the way down to f/40.  This lens is perfect for amazing detail shots.

I love how it can capture just one tiny petal in focus, while letting the rest of the flower fade away into a soft and creamy background.

There was a special Bonsai festival going on this weekend.  As we were looking through the collection we found this Jabba the Hutt hiding out at the roots of one of the trees.  You can spot Princess Leia being held captive in the top left.

Caught this little guy with his hand in the pollen jar.

And finally here’s Sharyn relaxing after a nice long day on our feet.

Kristina N. - Yay for the Nikon 105! :) Great photos James!
